J’Accuse of Friday 21 March 2025 The European identity afflicted by the new germs/ the Ventotene Manifesto of nationalism

the  J’Accuse of Friday 21 March 2025 the attack on the Ventotene Manifesto is an unmasking of the European identity afflicted by the new germs of nationalism

In fact, the Ukrainian question is increasingly revealed as the existential test for the European Union, driven between the aspiration to enlargement and the acquisition of an imperial or imperialistic form yet to be defined, but in conflict with other regional and world powers and the risk of implosion caused by the spread of the new germs of nationalism and racism rampant in the old continent. In this context characterized by chaos and the race towards rearmament, following the loss of the strategic and military guarantees of the United States of America to Europeans, Meloniano’s frivolous and symbolic attack on one of the manifestos that was the basis of anti-fascism and above all, I would say, of the very construction of the new European identity founded on solidarity and economic and political collaboration between European nations. It is no coincidence that such a topic was chosen at this crucial and serious moment for the life of the Union, because those who do so aim to undermine this identity and overturn the same history and the same political and economic achievements and lasting peace that have characterized the post-war period to the present. But the reality that is emerging before us is so worrying that we can no longer understand in which direction we are going: to jump on the bandwagon of those who cry out about the danger of Russian aggression or to desist and jump on the Trumpian one that wants détente and the relaunch of the American economy at the expense of that of the European countries, former allies and disappointed by the American abandonment of the role of guarantor of the defense of the European balances.

This is a very thorny situation that has just been described because it denotes a state of chaos and uncertainty not dissimilar to that which existed before the great wars of the twentieth century. Behind the unanimous cry: "Mother, the Russian danger!" There is an idea that is not inspired and I would say even less does not respect the underlying philosophy of the new anti-fascist and democratic European identity based on sharing and coexistence and not only that: only its splendor and its infinite political and economic benefits can be a driving force and integrators among the European peoples. Today what we are witnessing from this composite and anomalous corpus Europae is a desire to impose its will by all means on countries and political events such as the Ukrainian one with methods and means that are not peaceful, causing in fact a crisis within it from which political and dynamic forces are developing that are annihilating the moral and political spirit of the Ventotene Manifesto, hence the non-random statements of Meloni, the most illustrious and powerful politician on the European continent, according to the polls and the most specialized political magazines in the old continent. It is paradoxical and anti-historical to say the least, but what is taking place before our eyes is the rewriting of European history and the affirmation of a Europe of Nations in which dormant but never rootedly resolved conflicts and rivalries will be re-enacted. And it will be like throwing oneself into the ravine of the wickedness and horrors of future resurgent nationalisms that the aforementioned manifesto had tried over the course of decades to consider as the pit of the European peoples, to be avoided always and I would say ultimately with every democratic and non-democratic means.
