J’Accuse of March 28, 2025 on the reforms of the Meloni government and the institutional oppositions

Nicola Gratteri, Attorney General of Naples

In the land of milk and honey, politicians remain the caste par excellence with all the immunities, privileges and emoluments that the system reserves for them. Castes are by definition perennial because they pass down power, covering positions and roles that are fundamental to accessing them. The same goes for parties when they conquer or free up positions and positions by virtue of the electoral consensus to which they submit from time to time. But our democracy is and remains a relative and incomplete democracy because it is in the hands of party secretaries and the heads of the shift who choose who represents the country in the elective assemblies provided for by our constitution. Today we have a Meloni government that is trying to subvert our system of constitutional guarantees, introducing social, economic, legal and constitutional reforms that are truly harmful and unpopular. The Attorney General of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has been saying this for some time, particularly with regard to the reforms planned for justice and the judiciary (separation of careers). He harshly criticizes the recently approved reform that sets the time limit for intercepting most crimes at 45 days and says: "it is an incomprehensible reform because it always happens that even serious crimes are discovered after several months, because the right target cannot be found or because in many cases the evidence is collected after a long time" and above all it is inconsistent because if the law sets a term of a year and a half or two (depending on the crimes) to investigate, it is not clear why there should be a limit only for interceptions, which are a tool for investigating. Evidently the purpose is another". The attitude of this political class of extreme right-wingers in power is truly disconcerting and it is even more so because this same reform aims to protect them, that is, this caste in power that feels persecuted by a qualified, politicized and biased judiciary, always by them since Cavalier Berlusconi entered the field following the fall of the first republic to defend his interests. But compared to his political heirs, he had a certain dignity compared to them, given the bullying and abuses that have occurred in recent years. In this current political context characterized by a divided opposition incapable of growing in the country, the only ones making a real opposition are magistrates like Gratteri and bold journalists and writers who do not spare their criticisms of the current Meloni government. This division also came to light on the occasion of the launch of the rearmament plan that saw the PD of Secretary Schlein split and on the war in Ukraine itself where the contradictions were seen, the subordination and finally the slaps to our country by the Americans and the Russians, rightly so. The voices that symbolize the hot topics such as unemployment, falling purchasing power, wages, high bills, crumbling health care etc... are missing and what we see today as prominent authors are the Renzis with his satire motion/book on Meloni: The Influencer, a not bad idea to begin to crumble the illusions that made Meloni's climb to the palaces of Roman power possible.
